Aegina, in the centre of the Saronic Gulf is less than an hour by fast boat from Piraeus and has many sandy beaches including the popular resort of Ayia Marina. Named after the legendary wife of Zeus this is an island of myths and legends, a mild climate and a landscape covered in Pistachio trees.

Andros, in the Cyclades is close to the mainland and easy to get to making it a popular choice for weekending mainlanders. Rafina with daily ferries to Andros is the nearest port to Athens airport making this one of the easiest islands to get to.

Crete is the home of Europe's earliest civilization and the stunning palaces of Knossos and Phaestos. This is an island of cosmopolitan cities, remote mountainous hinterland and great beaches. Crete has the longest summers in Greece from May until October or November.

Evia also known as Evvia or Euboea is the second largest Greek island and seems more of an extension to the mainland. At its narrowest point, separated only by a 40km channel, it was reputedly split from the mainland by a blow from Poseidon's trident.
 
Kefallonia or Cephalonia made famous by the 2000 film of Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Since then there has been an influx of tourists sparking a buoyant holiday rental market as new and refurbished properties are brought to the buy to let market.
 
Kos is the second largest of the Dodecanese islands with the main harbour guarded by an imposing Knights of St John castle. Popular with tourists half the islands coastline is made up of beaches.
 
Lesvos or Mytilini, birthplace of Sappho and Aesop is the third largest Greek island and is covered in olive groves, thick oak and pine forests, sandy beaches, monasteries, pretty traditional houses and old mansions. Fourteenth century castles guard the main towns of this temperate island.
 
Mainland Greece is a massive area with good buy to let income from Athens and nearby towns such as Nea Makri. In the north east Halkidhiki and Thessaloniki are the main tourist areas offering quality beaches, historic buildings and monasteries making this an ideal buy to let investment area.

Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades islands with wonderful sandy beaches, stunning coast line and the highest mountains in the islands. Renowned for its wine and cheese this is a green and fertile island growing olives, lemons, grapes and potatoes.

Paros is the third largest island of the Cyclades and is fast becoming the place to buy property. The coastline is indented with numerous inlets and there are two large bays making ideal locations for sailing and water sports.

Pelion or the Mount Pilio peninsula on the east Thessaly coast is lush with orchards and dense beech and oak forests. It is the home of the mythical Centaur. Pelion is ideal for walking holidays in the spring and autumn along the traditional cobbled pathways linking the villages and the coast.

Peloponnese is an outstanding area of natural beauty and inspiring scenery, mountains for hiking and skiing, valleys full of lemon or olive trees, lovely beaches, rocky coves and full of history and ancient sites, home of the original Olympic Games, Agamemnon's Mycenae and the open air theatre at Epidavros.

Rhodes is the largest Dodecanese island and features the well preserved medieval city of the crusading Knights of St John who used it as their base from 1309 until 1522. Well served by air and ferry the island is popular with buy to let investors and second home owners alike.
 
Santorini or Thira is a spectacular volcanic island in the Cyclades, forever linked to Plato's legend of Atlantis this was an outpost of Minoan civilization. Sheer cliffs and red and black sandy beaches make this a popular tourist destination easily reached by air or ferry.
 
Spetses is just over two hours by fast ferry from Piraeus and is a popular destination for wealthy Athenians. Fans of the author and former resident John Fowles will recognise parts of the island from his book The Magus.
 
Thassos is the island of the Sirens in the north Aegean just off the coast of mainland Macedonian Greece. Famed for its marble, excellent honey, fine clean beaches, pine forests and picturesque mountain villages, this small island has rarely crowded beaches that are easily reached in a short drive.

Zakynthos is also known as Zante. This is the southernmost of the Ionian islands, contrasting pine covered mountains and fertile plains and a coastline of lovely beaches, while the west coast has magnificent rocky bays with many marine caves including the famous Blue Caves in the northwest.
